Oilers remove Sutton from trade-deadline scenarios

EDMONTON - Edmonton Oilers defenceman Andy Sutton has agreed to a new one-year contract for reportedly between $1.5 million and $1.75 million US a season that takes the unrestricted free agent out of the picture on NHL trade deadline day.
Sutton, who came to the Oilers last July 1 from the Anaheim Ducks in a trade for Kurtis Foster, would have been a solid depth pickup on Feb. 27 for a Stanley Cup contender.  http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/edmonton-oilers/Oilers+remove+Sutton+from+trade+deadline+scenarios/6142361/story.html
Shacks' Take:  Smart move by the Oil.  This team has done enough stocking of picks and prospects, they need legitimate NHLers to go with their youth.  Edmonton is swimming in forward depth but have a huge need on defense so if they let Sutton go they would have been looking for his replacement during the off-season.  The only moves that make sense for Edmonton right now should be to move their forward depth for some quality defensemen, not moving a rear guard they'll need to replace.
