Bears to meet with Forte's representatives this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Chicago Bears and representatives for star running back Matt Forte will open contract talks this weekend at the NFL Scouting Combine, a league source said Friday.

Forte and the Bears have been at odds over the running back's value for over a year, and Forte is set to hit the free-agent market next month. But the Bears aren't expected to let him become a free agent, and many anticipate the team will use the franchise tag on Forte if the sides can't agree to a long-term solution. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82728d95/article/bears-to-meet-with-fortes-representatives-this-weekend-?module=HP11_headline_stack

Shacks' Take: This one's easy. Pay the man!  There are certain players that deserve special treatment and teams should do everything within their power to properly reward for what they do for their franchises, Matt Forte is one.  Forte is among an elite group of running backs the offense runs through, like Ray Rice and Arian Foster, who are irreplaceable.  To me the franchise tag should be reserved for players like Cliff Avril who aren't the key to your team and really haven't earned special treatment.  Why wouldn't you want the key to your offense and one of your three most important players to feel happy and secure, it just makes sense.
