MacKinnon: Oilers’ interest in trade deadline deals ‘depends’

EDMONTON - All right, who's kidding who. The Edmonton Oilers will be sellers at the NHL's Feb. 27 trade deadline, that's a given.

How many other teams really want what they have to sell? Do the Oilers want to sell what other teams really want?

"It depends" is as close to a definitive answer as anyone can offer at this point. It's a fluid situation, multifactorial. The central concern, Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini reinforced, is not jeopardizing the young core of a rebuilding team. Beyond that, it just depends. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/edmonton-oilers/MacKinnon+Oilers+interest+trade+deadline+deals+depends/6153332/story.html

Edmonton's young offensive prospects sound like a starting line-up for a future all-star game: Hall, Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle, Paajarvi, Gagner. Their defense?  Not so much. Whitney & Smid are good not great and the rest of the cast is passable at best.  If the Oil can flip some players for a young defender with the potential to be a bona-fide number one, they have to do it.  Hall, Eberle & Nugent Hopkins are untouchable, beyond that, Tambellini should move heaven and earth to get that missing piece. It's fine and dandy to have all that offensive talent but if you don't have anyone to get the disc up to them it's hard to succeed when the forwards are always flat-footed by the time the puck is advanced.  Doesn't Nashville have too many d-men and a need for some creative forwards?  I'm just saying…
