The Globe’s Shoalts thinks 3-point games ruining trade deadline

What the heck, let's blame Gary Bettman.
After all, the three-point system contributing most to the current trade-deadline inertia arrived under the NHL commissioner's watch. As the Feb. 27 trade deadline approaches, there are still far too many teams that think they're still in position to make a playoff run to create the annual player auction.

In the Eastern Conference, there were either eight teams in the hunt for the last two playoff spots or nine chasing three before the NHL's games Sunday, depending how you look at the race. Similarly, there were seven teams in the Western Conference chasing the last three spots. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/david-shoalts/no-surrender-as-nhl-trade-deadline-nears/article2335909/

Shacks' Take: Is it Gary Bettman's job to make the GM's jobs easier?  Teams that are desperate to make moves at the deadline probably should have done a better job filling their needs in the summer.  Shoalts uses Chicago's need for a goalie and the lack of available goalies as reasoning behind why the three point games are keeping too may teams competitive stifling the trade opportunities.  I think that's only a sign Chicago should have had a better plan in net than a second year guy they weren't sure of, and a noted flake who has only proved inconsistent through the years.  Chicago spent their resources elsewhere in the summer, now the league should make it easier for them to fix their mistake?  I think the GM's should remember the 5 P's: Proper planning prevents poor performance.
