Matheson: Gagner Likely Staying; Khabibulin Might be Going

EDMONTON — Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini is getting calls about Sam Gagner, but it would be a shock if the forward is dealt at the NHL trade deadline.

Eight points in a single game and figuring in 11 straight goals over two games makes you a tad more unavailable. http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/edmonton-oilers/Gagner+probably+staying/6153218/story.html

Shacks' Take:  Personally I think this is a little backwards.  Until Edmonton proves they have a legit goalie to replace the Bulin Wall, shipping him out would mean they would have to find a goalie in the off-season.  Much like Andy Sutton, he's not the best option in the world but trading an asset makes no sense unless you have the replacement ready.  Edmonton has a lot of high-end forwards and very few defensemen or goalies, thus by doing some math in my head it means the Oil should be shopping forwards and strengthening their defense and goaltender positions.   I also don't think more draft picks for veterans is the way to go because Edmonton should be trying to push for the playoffs by next year and aiming for higher within three.  It's time to stop re-building and start building.
