TOP 11 SALARY CAP HITS IN THE NHL

Below, we have the top 11 players in terms of their salary cap hit. We are going to take a look at each of these players and see just how much money they are making in terms of each goal that they score.

Do you think these players are worth what they are being paid? http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2012/02/07/hoffman_cap_hits/

Shacks' Take: I like the idea of the article but the angle he takes and reasoning he uses is specious at best.  Breaking down players salaries by amount they're paid per goal doesn't work.  Using that logic, Daniel Sedin has received $277,272/goal while Henrik Sedin has received a whopping $554,545/goal.  I guess Daniel is twice as valuable as Henrik.  Of course when the list gets to its only defenseman, he justifies the salary with Weber's intangibles.   It's easier to use flawed logic to support an argument than to simply state your opinion.  If Hoffman thinks Lecavalier and Heatley are overpaid, which they are, just say so and tell us why you think so.

Also, you'll notice he expands the list to a top 11 and not just a top 10.  This is so he can include Scott Gomez.   While this is cherry picking, you had to include it just for the amusement factor.  It's mind boggling enough that someone (Glen Sather) thought Scott Gomez should get paid like a top 10 forward in the league but to think another GM (Bob Gainey) would actually trade 2 assets to get this player and contract. To top it off, everyone with half a brain knew Slats was going to use the salary he dumped to sign Gaborik.  So Montreal could have signed Gaborik and kept Higgins and McDonagh if they hadn't made the deal. Awesome.
