What if the Indianapolis
Colts didn't have the first pick of the 2012 NFL draft, but the
third?
What if Peyton Manning
was recovering from knee surgery, not multiple neck procedures?
What if Colts owner Jim Irsay didn't talk out of both
sides of his horseshoe?
None of it matters now because Irsay thinks his franchise
is better off without Manning than with him. On Wednesday, the owner evicted
Manning from the only NFL home the 14-year veteran has ever known. Manning is
-- and this will take some getting used to -- a free agent. . More…
Shacks’
Take: If real life was the Wonderful World of Disney,
Peyton would finish his career a Colt but it ain’t and he can’t. There are $28mil reasons why this divorce had
to happen. Unless Gene was going to pay
the roster bonus that is due today, the Colts had no choice but to part ways with
the greatest player in franchise history.
Indy couldn’t take a chance on paying the bonus and
having Peyton not recover fully, especially when they have the ability to draft
Andrew Luck. Peyton didn’t want to
extend the payment date or restructure his contract, forcing the Colts hand and
giving hi the ability to choose his own destination. It’s an unfortunate end to a great run but it
was the only way this could end.
