Henrik Sedin may have been making a casual observation on the weekend
about what to him seems absurd, but he inadvertently underlined one of the
biggest problems facing a general manager trying to build a team in the NHL
today.
He was talking about NHL officiating to our Ben Kuzma and offered the
comment: "This might be the only sport where rules change throughout the season
depending upon where you are and what game you're playing." More…
Shacks’ Take: Tony’s got a point; the
league’s rules change faster than I change my four month old. They not only change day to day but also mid
game can see a sudden change in the calls depending on score and situation.
Are these refs discussing how to call the rest of the game? |
I’m not sure it means you can’t design your team in a certain mold, but
it does mean you need to be somewhat adaptable with the make-up of your
squad. There is more than one way to win
in the NHL and the more capable you are of not only adapting to the opponent
but also to the referee’s whims, the more the likelihood of your success. Hopefully the Canucks recent acquisitions
help Vancouver achieve this goal.
