It
was interesting to measure Daniel Sedin's response after the Canucks' 4-3 win
over Columbus
on Saturday night. Sedin scored two goals, his first markers in 10 games, while
the Canucks ended a three-game losing streak on home ice. This should have
qualified as happy news.
Right?
But Daniel was not happy.
"I didn't think we played that good tonight but we were able to
squeeze a win out," said Daniel, with a distinct trace of anger in his
voice. "We can't give up over 30 shots. That's unacceptable."
And that should qualify him for a truth in advertising award. More…
Danny knows they need to play better, they just aren't. |
Shacks’
Take: One could argue
the Canucks haven’t won anything and the amount they are paid should be
motivation enough. Since Ed likely
hasn’t played in a two-month playoff I’ll assume he has no idea what the
Canucks are feeling or what their motivation would be.
Vancouver needs to make the playoffs with a
favorable seeding for the playoffs. That’s it, and they accomplished that about
two months ago. Asking a team that
knows it has nothing to play for to play harder than desperate opponents is a
noble concept but unlikely to happen.
If in fact the Canucks are unable to turn it
up a notch once the playoffs start and get eliminated early, it will be another
lesson in the growth of this team and you’ll likely see a more concerted effort
next year. The Canucks should be more
worried about ensuring their defense is tightened than effort level at this
point. How thrilled would anyone be to
throw their body around and risk injury when it will have no effect on their
ultimate goal?
Is it arrogance or boredom? I’ll let you decide but you know my answer.
