Staples Speculates Oilers May Trade For Leafs Young D-Man

There's been plenty of trade buzz around a number of young NHLers this trade deadline, including Sam Gagner in Edmonton and Luke Schenn in Toronto.

Who knows if how credible any of it is?  But if the Oilers are thinking of moving Gagner for a defenseman and doing business with Brian Burke, who has a handful of young defensemen, the player that should be the target is just as likely to be Carl Gunnarsson as it is Schenn, at least if you go by which player Leafs coach Ron Wilson entrusts with the most ice-time and the most challenging ice-time (and lacking other solid evidence, I do put some stock in that).  http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/01/27/if-the-oilers-want-to-puck-a-dmen-from-the-leafs-who-should-be-the-target-schenn-or-gunnarsson/

Shacks Take:  I'm not sure what the Oil and their fans think they're getting back for Sam Gagner but it's not Luke Schenn.  Quality young d-men come at a premium over 40 point forwards in the NHL.  The Oilers need a stud defenseman not another decent one and it's going to take a lot more than Sam Gagner to procure one of those.
